FAQ

When will Soundings be published next?

a. Soundings will publish another issue in the spring for the 2019-20 school year. Online issues are an excellent opportunity to showcase your skills and see your work published. We are in the process of fundraising to make this online issue a print issue as well.

Does Soundings have a theme?

a. The theme for the Spring 2020 issue is: Saudade, a feeling of longing, melancholy, or nostalgia. This theme is meant to guide submissions, but you are free to interpret it however you wish.

What happens if my work is accepted?

a. You will be notified in the case of acceptance. Soundings staff will work with you further if your work needs minor editing (i.e. grammar mistakes, any clarifications).

What is the difference between the Falcon's "Voices Around Campus" and Soundings?

a. "Voices Around Campus" is published in the newspaper while Soundings is a school literary magazine separate from the newspaper and the yearbook, although it is run by students in the SHS journalism program. "Voices Around Campus" primarily accepts opinion pieces from people who are not on the newspaper staff, while Soundings accepts creative works.

What is the meaning of the magazine's title?

a. "Soundings" has been the title of the Saratoga High School Arts and Literary Magazine for more than 30 years, and it is a reference to the nautical term sounding, a process that  measures depth. Student work showcased in Soundings is meant to metaphorically echo through the literary world and make deep impressions in readers' minds.
